In the Philippines, EVERYBODY SINGS!!
This was probably my favourite moment at the university. I was about to leave but I asked them if they'd sing a song. I was quite expecting a shy refusal, but instead, this is what I got. Even with a guitar that wouldn't hold a tune for more than a minute, the whole class launched into it. Another time I was riding on a bus and everyone on the bus started singing to Cyndi Lauper on the radio! That would never happen where I am. And for someone who loves to sing, that kind of laid-back freedom could be addictive. In case you haven't been following along, I was in the Philippines in March to prepare for a summer study tour to this university, which is a sister project of HOPE Japan, where indigenous kids who otherwise wouldn't have a chance of going to university, are completing their degrees. This is from my trip to the Philippines last week with HOPE Japan. I'll get more footage up soon but for now, I thought you might find this entertaining. Japan has lots of odd foods - natto, hachi no ko, and dolphin may top the list - but balut tops all of those. When you are chewing on a piece of partly formed chick beak, you know that you are not in Kansas anymore...
